Sublime stars. Costumes and Theatrical Jewellery by Swarovski from Marilyn Monroe to Nicole Kidman

06/05/2005

The exhibition Sublime Stars offers the general public a chance to see the evocative costumes and dazzling jewellery by Swarovski worn, from the 1950s up to the present day, by great American and Italian film stars: Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Anna Magnani, Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren, Giulietta Masina, Monica Vitti, Claudia Cardinale, Catherine Zeta Jones and Nicole Kidman. Side by side with these unique items some important models of American “civilian “ clothes are on show; they are clearly inspired by the cinema and form part of the permanent collection of the Giacomini-Meo Foundation Fashion and Costume Museum, situated in the west wing of 18th century Villa Mazzucchelli. Between the 1940s and 50s fashion became inextricably linked with the cinema and, in particular, with American cinema. Trends were set by actors such as James Dean and Marlon Brando, Jean Harlow and Marilyn Monroe, stars of the day and forerunners of the modern testimonial actor who takes the leading role in advertisements too, thus promoting fashion.
