F. Meo, Irons and Sewing Machines, Fondazione Giacomini-Meo-Fiorot, 1995

The Fashion and Costume Museum boasts a precious collection of irons and ironing machines dating back to the XVII century. They document the historic development of this tool from the most ancient flatirons to the type with boxes to core irons and gas irons which only appeared in the eighteen hundreds. Alongside the collection of valuable irons is the collection of sewing machines of the XIX and XX centuries made in Italy, Germany and England by the main manufacturers: Necchi, E. Howe, Singer, Gower & Baker, Seymour, Willcox & Gibbs. The booklet offers a selection of the most significant items documented with detailed technical descriptions and a wealth of photographs.
Eighth booklet of Franca Meo’s work “The Women’s Museum” (Fondazione Giacomini-Meo, 1995).
Text in Italian and English. Translated by A. Butcher.

33 x 24 cm., 16 pp. colour illustrations
