As regards the jewellery section, the Mazzucchelli Museums possess a vast collection of bracelets, necklaces, belts and jewels from Somalia, Kenya, Zanzibar, Morocco, Senegal, The Ivory Coast, Egypt, South Africa, India and China. Made from different materials such as silver, tortoiseshell, ivory or amber they are decorated with agate, cornelian, jade and lapis lazuli. Loaded with symbolic and apotropaic significance as well as being ornamental, the oldest items date back to the XIX century. The individual items are documented with detailed technical descriptions and a wealth of photographs.
Seventh booklet of Franca Meo’s work “The Women’s Museum” (Fondazione Giacomini-Meo, 1995).
Text in Italian and English. Translated by A. Butcher.

“The variety of the items on display and their workmanship (sometimes refined, sometimes primitive) speak strongly and suggestively of the peoples they come from […] they remind us, moving us, of the colours and smells of the land of Africa, together with the gleams of the eyes and the skin of its women”.
