F. Meo, Parasols, fans and handkerchiefs, Fondazione Giacomini-Meo-Fiorot, 1995

This booklet proposes a historical introduction to the development of the parasol, the fan and the handkerchief from ancient times to today.
The precious accessories of the museum collection document the use of these accessories from the end of the seventeen hundreds to today in Italy, France, Spain and China. Refined silk, lace and ivory parasols are on display together with folding fans made of paper, silk, painted silk, feathers, lacquered wood and tortoiseshell. Whether waved to greet someone, given as a pledge or allowed to fall under the pretext of attracting someone’s attention the handkerchief is another charming accessory which no woman can do without. The individual items are documented with detailed technical descriptions and a rich array of photographs.
Fifth booklet of Franca Meo’s work “The Women’s Museum” (Fondazione Giacomini-Meo, 1995).
Text in Italian and English. Translated by A. Butcher.
