F. Meo, Spinning, weaving and embroidery, Fondazione Giacomini-Meo-Fiorot, 1995
The spinning and weaving section of the Fashion and Costume Museum includes many examples of the different instruments required for these activities. Carders, ripples, spindles, spinning wheels, skein-winders, looms and lace pillows tell the history of weaving from the Seventeen hundreds to the present day. The booklet offers a selection of the most significant exhibits, documented with detailed technical descriptions and a wealth of photographs. Ninth booklet of Franca Meo’s work “The Women’s Museum” (Fondazione Giacomini-Meo, 1995). Text in Italian and English. Translated by A. Butcher.
“The custom of giving work instruments as a present [..] was very common among the working classes in the last centuries. They could be simple constructions made of ordinary wood, simply bear a message wishing industriousness, but for special occasions they became absolute jewels, made of precious woods, sculpted with female figures, birds, flowers and geometrical patterns, carefully worked at the lathe”.
