F. Meo, The Handbags, Fondazione Giacomini-Meo-Fiorot, 1995

The booklet offers a historic introduction to the development of the handbag from its origins to our times, some stages of which can be seen in the most significant items in the museum collection. The XIX century started with handbags made of metal links, which became more refined over the years making use of elegant Gobelins fabrics and embroidery. Coloured glass and crystal beads, embroidery with crochet and lace enrich the handbags of the early Nineteen hundreds. The individual items are documented with detailed technical descriptions and a wealth of photographs.
Sixth booklet of Franca Meo’s work “The Women’s Museum” (Giacomini-Meo Foundation, 1995).
Text in Italian and English. Translated by A. Butcher.

“The handbag has today become an indispensable accessory, chosen to suit the occasion. [….] Every woman has one, but many of these accessories, which follow her wherever she goes in her increasingly dynamic life, jealously carry the things she needs for work, her make- up, and objects which remind her of her life and her loved ones.” Franca Meo
